Bee Guardians is an association that supports bee protection, promotes sustainable beekeeping, and preserves biodiversity involving a digital community. This association repopulates bees with safer shelters and addresses threats through technology. Bee Guardians share collected data with researchers and the community to enhance hive management and raise awareness.
Championing beekeepers, Bee Guardians donate hives to those affected by climate challenges, making them active project stakeholders. The association addresses various challenges faced by bee species (including pollution, pesticides, predators, and parasites), in order to positively impact the remaining species and restore their natural habitat.
I was responsible for developing the logo and visual identity for the project. Let's have a look at the process and the final result.
Here are several iterations of the project, showcasing the progression leading to the final version. Initially, I experimented with combining the letter G and the concept of protection, represented by a shield. Some stripes were added to resemble a bee.
A bee with a shield to resemble the letter G.
In the next iteration, I attempted to combine the letters B and G by using two bees shaped like these letters. This approach emphasizes a more geometric design with precise alignment. The incorporation of strict lines aims to convey a sense of protection and steadiness. Additionally, eyes were introduced to give the logo the impression of a guardian overseeing the bees, symbolizing safeguarding and assurance.
Experimenting with the letters B and G in a softer manner, the bees were designed to appear more friendly, playful, and open, avoiding an aggressive look.
All previous versions were rejected by the client. Consequently, I continued my search for a better identity for Bee Guardians. Suddenly, I discovered a perfect geometric combination: a hexagon incorporating a shield, a bee head, and a beehive, all in a minimalistic and aligned shape.
Experimenting with these shapes revealed an issue: the look of these bees appears quite aggressive, overly strict, blind, almost robotic, and lifeless. The version I liked the most, marked by a pink circle, features rounded corners to impart a friendlier appearance.
For a period, this version was deemed final. It was minimalistic, encapsulating the concepts of bee, protection, and hexagon.
However, the client expressed concern that the bee resembled a wasp. Therefore, a redesign was suggested to make it more rounded and friendly. I presented several new proposals.
Finally, the ultimate version is here! I selected orange, white, and black as the main colors, with two additional variations in blue.
I also created a brand book for Bee Guardians, and below are some excerpts from it.
The logo fits well across various mediums, including digital interfaces, stationery, clothing, packaging, and more.
